Arrest warrant issued for 102 figures in Turkey's Sledgehammer

A warrant has been issued by the Istanbul 10th Court for Serious Crimes, ordering the arrest of 102 people in relation to the “Balyoz” (Sledgehammer) case, the private HaberTürk channel reported.

The warrant includes the names of retired generals İbrahim Fırtına, Çetin Doğan and retired Adm. Özden Örnek.

All suspects in the Sledgehammer case had previously been released after the last person accused was freed on July 7.

The first court hearing will take place on Dec. 16 at Istanbul’s Silivri Prison, the report said.

Sledgehammer involves an alleged military coup plot against the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, drafted in 2003.

According to the allegations of the case, the military planned drastic measures to foment unrest in the country in order to remove the AKP from power, included bombing two major mosques in Istanbul, an assault on a military museum by people disguised as religious extremists and raising tension with Greece through an attack on a Turkish plane that was to be blamed on the Aegean neighbor
